this week was all about debates and unemployment. it just didn't seem to fit in. yeah, it got out there. >> amy holmes, has obama's speech received moderate coverage at the time and this time around covered as a media story and disappeared. did this story fizzle? >> i think it did and it's unfortunate. it fizzled because it was covered as a race war story or a media story instead of a promise story that senator obama is promising better treatment because of disparate treatment. historically has that come to pass. he's made some very bold claims as you pointed out that new orleans got less favorable treatment than new york. it turns out some fact-checkers said that wasn't true. but meanwhile he's been president for four years whach has he done to wreckty file that situation? has he worked with governor jindal? how did this all play out and unfortunately the media is not asking those questions. >> i talked to tucker carlson of "newsweek" this week. he said some of the reaction in the press was disgust and reflects t reflects a larger problem in the press, the initia

next week we also have the vice presidential debate. it will be interesting to find out what kind of adjustments team obama will be making over the next few days. >> let's talk about those adjustments. how is the obama campaign reacting to the president's performance today? >> well, you know, first of all, they are praising his performance, saying it was a strong performance, but they're going after the substance, saying -- criticizing him, saying that his policies, his plans, what he said during the debate last night. there were a lot of flaws, distortions. take a listen to the president's campaign as senior adviser david axelrod on the "today" show this morning. >> i didn't say he was out debated. i think he treated the american people like adults and he told them the truth, which was a f d fundamental distinction between him and governor romney last night on a whole host of issues. i joked that governor romney put more preparation into it than they did into the invasion of normandy. i expected a strong performance. i got a strong per

both of them showed a lot more energy than barack obama did last week. >> howie, it's ryan. listen. in that clip, the thing i thought was interesting about this debate is jon stewart, it seems to me he's sort of grown into a more of -- less of a comedian and more of a pundit role in the last couple years. his thing was always that you can't really hold him responsible for his views because he's skritrictly a comedian. he would laugh about the fact he's on comedy central, this low budget cable channel. there he is talking about what he would do about health care. do you think this guy has sort of -- there's an evolution here going on with stewart? >> absolutely. i've been watching that evolution for years. you'll remember he had the million moderate march or whatever it was called down on the mall here in dc a couple years ago. he wants to be taken seriously. he's a very sharp critic. not just of those of us in the media who sometimes get stung by what he has to say. but of the political scene. and i think as you watch him on "the daily show," yes, he is a very cogent comic. but more
